Typhoon Dujuan brings flood risk and travel disruption

Typhoon Dujuan lashed eastern Japan on Monday with intense rain and strong winds, triggering emergency landslide warnings and widespread travel disruption. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest landslide alert for Oshima in the Izu Islands shortly after midday. Rainfall totals exceeded 500 millimeters in parts of the island chain. Chiba Prefecture also recorded more than 300 millimeters from Saturday through early Monday afternoon. Officials warned residents about flooding, swollen rivers, landslides, and dangerous coastal conditions.

Nepal flood missing count rises to 6,150 after verification

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has raised the number of people missing after the Aug. 26 floods to 6,150. The revised total is 971 higher than the previous figure of 5,179. Officials said updated records from affected districts drove the increase after verification. Authorities have also recovered 1,403 bodies since the disaster struck. The floods and debris flows caused extensive damage across northern Nepal, particularly near the border with China.

Rare EGFR mutation raises lung cancer risk 60 times in data

The mutation occurs in the epidermal growth factor receptor gene, which regulates cell growth and division across pulmonary tissue. While somatic EGFR mutations acquired during a person’s lifetime are known drivers of non-small cell lung cancer, the T790M germline variant is inherited at birth and present in every cell. Data compiled by the National Cancer Institute shows the mutation occurs in approximately 1 out of every 15,850 people in the United States. Lead study author Dr. Jaclyn LoPiccolo noted that carrying the variant raises lung cancer odds roughly 62 times in never-smokers, compared to about 11 times in individuals with a history of smoking.

Porsche to cut 5000 more jobs under restructuring plan

German luxury sports car manufacturer Porsche announced an agreement with labor representatives on Monday to reduce its workforce by an additional 5,000 positions by 2035 as part of a restructuring program.
